night market

jenny, my nursing preceptor took aubrey and i to the night market for the full taiwan experience. there was much talk of this prior to even leaving for taiwan so we had plenty of time to think about what exactly we would be putting ourselves through but nothing could prepare us for what we were about to experience. the night market is a world in and of it's self. like the american swap meets, the masses, compiling of all ages, aggregate into a tiny space full of line upon lines of various stands with the most unfathomable foods. as opposed to just writing about each one, i decided to just post picture upon picture of everything i tried and the faces associated with each.

warning: viewer discretion advised

chicken feet:  really not that bad but the fact that i was chewing on a talon made the whole experience excruciating. apparently the correct way to eat these is to bite off a toe and chew it up until all the meat is off the bone then spit out the bone with the talon.

squid: seriously yummy
garlic snails: the weird thing about these guys is you have to suck them to shoot out the meat from inside the shell into your mouth.

jenny and judy: our sweet guides and interpreters to help explain what we exactly were biting into. jenny was aubrey and my nurse for our ortho rotation. she probably speaks the best english in tainan. judy was also a nurse on the floor who came along for the fun night

blood pudding: absolutely disgusting! it wasn't so much the taste as it was the texture. it felt just like jello but then the thought that you actually bit into a blood clot crosses your brain and it's all downhill from there.

duck liver and fish soup: spicy! i accidently swallowed the broth down the wrong tube and was coughing for a good 30 minutes. the liver is nasty and should never be served to anyone. the fish balls were not too bad. my dinner consisted mainly of this broth.

first the liver...

then the fish...

top it off with the broth...

we ordered an oyster omelet which is one of jenny's favorite meals to order at the night market.

jim's classy eating style.

my father taught me well. ten bullets = ten bull's eyes.

our winnings.

some honorable mentions to describing the smell of stinky tofu:
chelsea: ten old sewers found in Chicago
nicole: three sumo wrestler's dirty underwear
aubrey: a barnyard
liz: like someone who diarrhea-ed in a sewer topped with rat excrement

cow tongue

the grand finale...

crickets!

an eye opening experience i will never forget!
